The ODRT – BSODR Crispian Scully Research Award

The Oral and Dental Research Trust is pleased to announce the 2024 Crispian Scully Research Award

This award is made in memory of Crispian Scully CBE, a long-standing Trustee of the Oral and Dental Research Trust (ODRT) and eminent clinical academic, with significant contribution to Special Care Dentistry – a field of oral healthcare which Professor Scully helped advance in many different ways and championed in his illustrious career.

Applications are being sought to support a programme of research to initiate adventurous and ambitious curiosity-driven research, with potential to open up novel paths of research or result in discipline-shifting discovery, advancing innovation in clinical dentistry.    This call is open to all disciplines in oral and dental research.

Funded by the Oral and Dental Research Trust and the British Society for Oral and Dental Research, one grant is available in 2024 to dental healthcare professionals and scientists in the UK to a maximum value of £6,000.  The award is not intended to cover salary costs of applicants, as a ‘top-up’ to an existing award, or to fund attendance at scientific meetings. 2 projects per year will be funded: one clinical research and one fundamental science project, including dental public health topics.

Applications, which should be structured, must include:

  • No more than two sides of A4 setting out the background, purpose and details of the proposed programme of research.
  • Detail and justification for the proposed expenditure, included in the two-side application.
  • A concluding, 200-word maximum, impact statement indicating the ways in which the proposed research is anticipated to benefit patients and/or the public. This can be additional to the two A4 sides.

Completed applications should be submitted electronically to the Administrative Officer of the ODRT, Ms Marie Jones, m.e.jones@bham.ac.uk by 31st May 2024.  The receipt of applications will be acknowledged.  Should applicants be unable to provide acknowledgement of receipt of their application, the ODRT will not accept that submission has been made.

The ODRT is an NIHR non-commercial partner.  As such, studies funded by the ODRT are eligible for consideration for inclusion onto the NIHR Portfolio.

The recipient(s) of the ODRT Crispian Scully Award will be announced during the annual meeting of the British Society for Oral and Dental Research (BSODR).

The awardee will need to commit to agreeing to present their completed project at a BSODR conference (oral or poster).

The ODRT Crispian Scully Award is funded jointly by the ODRT and BSODR.
